I like Al's for going to get an idea of what gear I want. But unless you hit it on one of the employee pricing sales, you are going to pay way more than you do online. Staff attempts to be helpful, but end up being a little annoying. If you are just looking around they hawk over you and try to help, and are most of the time just college students who don't really know what they are talking about and give sub par recommendations.
Logan's most well known sporting goods store. It has a great selection of gear, and knowledgeable staff, but you can get just as good of gear and help at much cheaper prices. Because they're the most well known, they can charge for it. It you can get a discount it's worth it, but otherwise make sure you check out the other options as well.
Al's is of of the few stores in logan that's just fun to go to. I've purchased shoes, fishing gear, a few guns and some ammo there, and the staff has always been knowledgeable and helpful! The have great sales a few times a year and the rest of the time I've found that they were more than happy too price match, even with Amazon! I've also never had a problem with returns there.... overall, Al's is very customer centric and I'm glad they're here!
Have lived in Cache Valley all my life, so I leave this review based upon a life long experience. Al's is great if you want to buy things at the higher end of price ranges offered. I can only speak about the shoe department, bikes, ski, camping, and climbing departments as that is only what I use. About half the time the employees have no idea what I am talking about, or act like they know and come off sounding incompetent. If you want gear experts in climbing and backpacking things offered, go somewhere else, as the advice is hit or miss. When I was to young to know the difference, an employee suggested I buy a large backpack for backpacking based upon my height, so I bought a large. Turns out when you measure my torso length(which they did not do), I am actually between a small and a medium, which resulted in bruising of my lumbar. Another experience was when I was looking for micro-fleece jackets and an employee said they did not stock them, which they totally do. I have also gone in inquiring about AT gear and have had less than stellar experiences. That being said, Weston in the bike shop is phenomenal, hard worker and is an EXPERT. There have also been other experts and exceptional employees which have usually left(none left I can name now expect Weston). Management of business overall seems to cater to popularity of likability of employees than actual experience and knowledge.
Most items in the store will be full MSRP on a regular basis, so I generally choose to shop during sales. The sales are pretty frequent throughout the year. Advice at the store is hit or miss depending on the department. But that’s understandable in a college town with a lot of turnover. I’m happy to shop at Al’s when I can to support local.
